After his reelection as Iran's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad extends an invitation to his American counterpart Barack Obama for a debate before the eyes of the world.
Addressing Iranian heads of medical universities on Saturday, President Ahmadinejad offered to debate President Obama at the United Nations headquarters in New York before the eyes of all nations of the world.
President Ahmadinejad had previously urged a debate with former US president George W. Bush.
The Iranian president wrote an 18-page letter to President Bush in 2006 that touched on religious values, history and international relations. The letter was viewed as an offer extended to the United States for dialogue.
However, the Iranian official's letter never received an answer from the former US president.
Under the former US president, Washington pursued a carrot-and-stick policy toward Tehran over its nuclear program and by setting preconditions, snubbed calls by President Ahmadinejad for talks on the long-standing dispute.
Meanwhile President Obama has adopted a new tone for engaging Tehran, drawing a sharp line between his foreign policies regarding Iran and that of his predecessor.
The call for talks come as earlier in February, Ahmadinejad expressed willingness for dialogue but stressed that negotiations should be held "in a climate of fairness with mutual respect."
Earlier in May a report by the Israeli daily Haaretz said the United States had set October as its deadline for engaging Iran in the first round of talks over the country's nuclear activities.
The report quoted the special US envoy on Iran, Dennis Ross, as saying that "unless the US sees a change in Iran's position on its nuclear program, Washington's stance toward Tehran will stiffen at that time."
An Iranian lawyer has said that his client Hossein Rassam, a British Embassy staffer who remains detained over recent unrest, has been accused of "acting against national security."
Lawyer Abdol-Samad Khorramshahi told AFP on Saturday that he was seeking permission to see his client, saying, "I have not met with him yet, but I will ask the judiciary for an appointment."
"I was told by a close relative that he is accused of acting against national security,” he added.
Iran became the scene of violence in recent weeks amidst rallies staged in protest at the outcome of the June 12 presidential election -- which saw Mahmoud Ahmadinejad elected for a second term in office.
After warning other countries against interfering in its internal affairs, the Tehran government arrested nine Iranian nationals working at the British Embassy and said that these people had played a role in encouraging the post-election violence.
The British government said that seven of those arrested in Tehran have been released. However, Iranian state television has said that just one of them remains in detention.
In a statement on Friday, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband said he was "urgently seeking clarification" from Iranian officials, dismissing allegations that the staffers were involved in any illegal act.

A senior Iranian cleric has strongly criticized western countries in particular the United States for supporting Israel's aggression.
Addressing Tehran's Friday Congregational Prayer, Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani criticized the US and France for arming Israel with nuclear weapons.
Rafsanjani reproached Britain as primarily responsible for Israel's occupation of Palestinian lands.
The Head of the Assembly of Experts also censured the United Nations for its inaction regarding the situation in Palestine, condemning the international body for having officially divided Palestine.
In September 1947, the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine (UNSCOP) reported in favor of the partition of Palestine. On November 29, 1947, the UN General Assembly ratified the suggestion, which envisaged the creation of two states, one Arab and one Jewish.
At Friday prayer, Rafsanjani also criticized Arab silence in face of Israeli aggression. He noted that the Palestinian struggle would finally bear fruit, calling Palestinians a model for all resistance movements.
Millions of people held rallies today to mark Quds Day and to voice support for the Palestinian nation. As the sun reached its zenith, Friday congregational prayer leaders around the planet spoke of righting injustice, particularly the injustice called Israel.

Quds Day keeps Palestinian cause alive
Hezbollah's leader says Quds Day is clearly alive decades after its inception, as a warning to Muslims against abandoning the Palestinian cause.
“Thirty years after Imam Khomeini (PBUH) announced Quds Day, it is clearly very much alive…and has always had the support of those generations who supported Imam Khomeini and followed his path,” said Seyyed Hassan Nasrallah during a televised address on the ocassion.
He hailed the annual event as an opportunity to reinvigorate the cause of al-Quds and Palestine, “which was and still is subject to destruction, bargaining and forgetfulness.”
“The idea is not just for standing at podiums and crying because of (Palestinian) losses,” he said, adding that by marking Quds Day, Muslims highlight their determination to rectify the situation.
Nasrallah criticized those who are afraid of the negative repercussions standing for the Palestinian nation may bring, describing the issue as a central cause that concerns the destiny of the entire Islamic Ummah and of future generations.
He referred to the occupation of the Palestinian territories by Israel as a humiliation for Muslims whose noblest sanctities remain occupied by their 'racist Zionist' enemy.
The Hezbollah secretary general underscored the responsibility of the Muslim community towards al-Quds, Palestine and the Palestinian nation, saying Palestine belonged to the Palestinians, Muslims and the Arab world and that it must revert to its real owners.
He refuted the misconception of Israel being a superpower and described the Zionist regime as an entity created by Britain and taken over by the United States, noting that both are using Tel Aviv for their hegemonic aims. The Hezbollah chief then pored scorn on the shameful tactic of begging the founders of Israel in the hope of liberating the occupied territories.
He said Israel is the enemy of all Arabs and Muslims and called on the Arabs unite against their common enemy, adding that Premier Ehud Olmert's resignation is evidence of the Israeli defeat in the July 2006 war.
Nasrallah also emphasized that Hezbollah was genuinely devoted to the reconciliation of all Lebanese rival groups in the national effort to realize peace and political stability.
The founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Imam Khomeini, designated International Quds Day in 1979 to oppose Israel's occupation of Islam's third most holy city and Palestinian lands in general.
Anti-Zionist demonstrations are held on the last Friday of the fasting month of Ramadan in some Muslim countries and by Muslim and Arab communities around the world.

سرزمین عرفات پر آج اس وقت حجاج کرام کے اللہ اکبر امریکہ مردہ باد اسرائیل مردہ باد کے نعرے گونج اٹھے جب حجاج کرام نے سنت ابراہیمی کے مطابق برائت از مشرکین کا روح پرور اجتماع منعقد کیا ۔اس موقع پر ایرانی حج مشن کے سربراہ حجۃ الاسلام و المسلمین محمدی ری شہری نے رہبر انقلاب اسلامی کا پیغام بڑھ کر سنایا ۔ برائت از مشرکین کے اس روح پرور اجتماع میں اسلامی جمہوریۂ ایران کے حجاج کرام کے علاوہ ہندوستان ، پاکستان ، افغانستان ، عراق ، لبنان ، فلسطین سمیت دنیا کے سبھی ملکوں کے حجاج اور نمائندہ وفود نے شرکت کی اور عالم اسلام کی یکجہتی کا مظاہرہ کرتے ہوئے امریکہ اور خصوصا" قدس کی غاصب صیہونی حکومت سے اپنے نفرت و بیزاری کا اظہار کیا ۔حجاج کرام نے عراق ، لبنان ، فلسطین اور دنیا کے دیگر مسلمانوں کے ساتھ اپنی یکجہتی کا اظہار کیا اور رہبر انقلاب اسلامی کے حج پیغام کے تائید میں اللہ اکبر کے نعرے لگائے۔
رہبر انقلاب اسلامی حضرت آیت اللہ العظمی سید علی خامنہ ای نے حجاج کرام کے نام اپنے پیغام میں اسلامی امۃ کے روش اور امید افزا مستقبل نیز مسلمانوں کے مقابل امریکہ اور صہونیت کی شکست پرتاکید فرمائي ہے ۔رہبر انقلاب اسلامی نے اپنے پیغام حج میں میدان عرفات میں مشرکین سے اظہار بیزاری کئے جانے کی ضرورت پرزوردیتےہوئے فرمایاہےکہ اسلامی امۃ خدا کے سچے وعدوں پریقین رکھتے ہوئے ایمان اخلاص، امید وجہاد اور صبر بصیرت کےساتھ دشوار منزلوں کو سرکرلے گي۔ولی امر مسلمین حضرت آيت اللہ العظمی خامنہ ای نے فرمایاکہ اسلامی جمہوریہ ایران اسلامی تہذیب وتمدن کی حکمرانی کا مستحکم مرکزاورمغرب کے سیاسی اور اقتصادی مکاتب فکر کی کمزوری اور اضمحلال کا سبب بن چکا ہے۔ آپ نے فرمایا فلسطین کی تحریک انتفاضہ، صیہونی حکومت کے خلاف حزب اللہ کی تاريخي کامیابی نیز عراق میں عوامی اور اسلامی حکومت کی تشکیل، مشرق وسطی پر تسلط جمانے کی امریکہ کی سامراجی سازشوں کی ناکامی، صیہونی حکومت کے ناقابل علاج اندرونی مسائل، ایران کے خلاف ہمہ گیر پابندیوں اور اقتصادی محاصرے کےباوجود سائينسی اور ٹکنالوجیکل ترقی یہ سب کی سب دشمنوں کے مقابلے اس صدی میں اسلام کی کامیابیوں کی نشانیاں ہیں۔رہبر انقلاب اسلامی نے فرمایاکہ زخم خوردہ دشمن اپنی تمام تر توانائيوں کے ساتھ میدان میں اترآيا ہے ۔آپ نے مسلم امۃ کو انتباہ دیا کہ خدا کے سچے وعدوں سے مایوس نہ ہوں اورنہ ان کے تعلق سے منفی خیالات بد گمانی اور عدم التفات کا شکارنہ ہوں ۔آپ نے تاکید فرمائي کہ مسلم امۃ کےایمان واخلاص،امید وجہاد بصیرت وہوشیاری اور دانشمندی سے دشمن کی سازشیں ناکام ہوجائيں گي ۔آپ نے اپنے پیغام حج میں فرمایا ہے کہ غزہ پٹی میں دشمن کے بے رحمانہ اقدامات اور درندگي کہ جس کی مثال تاریخی بشریت میں بہت کم ملتی ہے ان عورتوں مردوں جوانوں اور بچوں کے مستحکم ارادے پر فائق آنے اور کچلنے کی سعی رائيگان اور کی علامت ہے جو غاصب اور اس کے حامی یعنی سپرپاور امریکہ کے مقابل ڈٹے ہوئے ہیں اور انہوں نے صیہونی حکومت اور امریکہ کے مطالبے کو جوکہ حماس کی حکومت سے روگردانی کرنا ہے نظرانداز کردیاہے ۔رہبر انقلاب اسلامی حضرت آيت اللہ العظمی خامنہ ای نے پیغام حج میں فرمایا ہےکہ فلسطین کی مظلوم اور صابر قوم سرانجام دشمن پرکامیاب ہوکررہے گي اور آج بھی ہم شاہد ہیں کہ امریکہ اور یورپ کی اکثر حکومتیں فلسطینیوں کی مزاحمت کو توڑنے میں ناکام ہیں اور حریت پسندی جمہوریت نیز انسانی حقوق کے جھوٹے دعوےکرنے والی ان حکومتوں کوسیاسی میدان میں بھی سخت شکست ہوئي ہےاور اس شکست کی اتنی جلدی تلافی نہ ہوسکے گي ۔

Iran hails world financial crisis as 'end of capitalism'

TEHRAN (AFP) — Iranian leaders say the world financial crisis indicates the end of capitalism, the failure of liberal democracy and divine punishment -- marking the superiority of the Islamic republic's political model.
"The school of Marxism has collapsed and the sound of the West's cracking liberal democracy is now being heard," supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Monday, recalling the fate of the Soviet Union.
Hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is backed by Khamenei, said on Tuesday that "it is the end of capitalism."
Such convictions can be traced back to the ideals of the 1979 Islamic revolution, which Ahmadinejad has sought to revive since he rose to power in 2005.
The firebrand president, who has not missed a chance to denounce Western "decadence" since his election, has exploited the scale of the global crisis to play up his argument.
He benefits from the luxury that the Tehran stock market has been unaffected by the losses that bourses in neighbouring Gulf states have suffered. That stability is attributable to the absence of foreign investors and to the government's firm grip on economic activity.
Several Iranian newspapers, regardless of their reformist or conservative leanings, have also blamed the global economic crisis on excessive liberalism.
And some officials, such as the head of Iran's electoral watchdog body, have come up with less conventional theories and branded the turmoil as "divine punishment."
"These people see the outcome of their bad deeds. This problem has spread to Europe now which makes us happy. The unhappier they are the happier we become," Ayatollah Ali Janati, who heads the Guardians Council, said in last Friday's prayer sermon.
Ahmadinejad has recently echoed that, saying "the reason of their defeat is that they have forgotten God and piety."
The financial crisis should be a divine sign that "the oppressors and the corrupt will be replaced by the pious and believers," he said, adding that "an Islamic banking system will help us survive the current economic crisis."
Ahmadinejad's administration favours such a system, based on interest-free lending, but the system has not been widely implemented and faces criticism by economists.
Elected on a justice campaign, the president has gone on a spending spree to "bring the oil money to the tables" of Iranian people.
But the cash injection to the economy has fuelled inflation, which has risen from around 10 percent at the time of his election to nearly 30 percent.
For Iran's supreme leader, the crisis particularly signifies the superiority of the Islamic republic's political structure, which combines elements of democracy with those of a theocracy.
Khamenei hailed the "victory of the Islamic revolution" in the face of Marxist and liberal ideologies. "Now there is no sign of Marxism in the world and even liberalism is declining," the all powerful leader said.
The Iranian regime deems the concepts of democracy and human rights as "imperialist" tools to dominate other nations.
The Islamic republic thus defends its electoral practice of vetting candidates running for public office according to their religious adherence and its judicial system, which resorts to the death penalty for serious crimes more than any country in the world except for China
